This alignment is further strengthened by a planetary trine, with the sun positioned 120 degrees from Mars—both in air signs, which are linked to flowers. Flowers not only bring joy and beauty to the garden but also attract insects and bees, whose pollination fulfils the flower’s highest purpose. Honeybees move gracefully from bloom to bloom, drinking nectar and spreading pollen, while the garden awakens to the song of spring and the blossoming of new life.

As the Moon rises in the constellation of Aquarius before quickly transitioning into Pisces, we are presented with an opportunity for renewal as we approach March and the calls of Spring. We can compare the seasons of the year to the parts of a plant and the elements: Winter corresponds to Water and the leaves; Spring to Air and the flowers; Summer to Fire and the fruits; and Autumn to Earth and the roots. Now, we find ourselves on the threshold of transition, moving gently from the depths of Water to the lightness of Air, as the energies of renewal begin to stir.

The smallest and fastest planet, Mercury orbits the Sun every 88 days. In biodynamic practice, each compost preparation is linked to a planet. For Mercury, Chamomile 503 is added to the compost pile, where it helps assimilate calcium. Like the other preparations, it works in harmony with the entire set of six compost preparations, each contributing its unique influence to enhance the composting process. As the compost preparation disperses through the land, it benefits the soil and plants, starting as an inoculator in the compost pile and continuing to support healthy growth.

If we were to compare farm animals to the elements, we might say that pigs are earthy, cows are connected to water, horses to fire, and goats to air—often standing on their hind legs to reach forage and thriving in mountainous terrain. Even their manure reflects these elemental qualities, making them ideal for different uses in the garden. For example, horse manure is well-suited for tomatoes, while goat manure benefits roses.

The moon deepens its descent into the constellation of Virgo, sharpening our attention to detail and enhancing our capacity for focus. In the garden, this is an ideal time to tend to carrots and potatoes, as well as to plant shallots and onions—root vegetables that benefit from the moon’s position in Virgo. However, by the afternoon, the timing shifts in favour of flower care. As the moon reaches apogee, its farthest point from the Earth, the intensified light makes this a particularly good moment for pruning roses and perhaps propagating some cuttings.

The moon rises in the constellation of Virgo, making it an ideal time to stir and apply the biodynamic preparation Cow Horn Manure 500. This preparation will help vitalize the soil, build its structure, and support the development of microbial and fungal life in preparation for spring. It is ideal to spray in the afternoon when the Earth is breathing out. Another good time to apply this preparation will be in 10 days, on February 26th, when the moon returns to an earth sign in the constellation of Capricorn. This gives you some time to research and prepare for stirring and applying the preparation, which is an integral part of biodynamic agriculture. It is essential to apply this preparation, along with the other biodynamic preparations, to help make our soils sensitive and vital, especially as we have been taking more from the soil than we have been giving back for a long time.
