Tuesday 18th March
The moon transitions from the earthy constellation of Virgo to the airy constellation of Libra, bringing subtle changes both internally and externally. The rhythms of the sun and moon shape every moment of life on Earth, giving us our months and years and providing everything needed to sustain life. Everything we grow in our gardens can be considered condensed light. Distant stars and constellations also exert their own subtle influences. Cosmic rays, composed of high-energy particles like neutrons and muons, have even been known to affect computer systems. Before the rise of artificial light and sprawling cities, humanity closely observed the stars; now, we seem to be piecing that awareness back together. Biodynamics seeks to understand these cosmic rhythms and experiment with ways to cultivate a more sensitive approach to agriculture.

Monday 17th March
The Moon rises in the earthly constellation of Virgo, aligning its forces with the roots of plants. This would typically make it a favourable time to tend to root crops, such as sowing parsnips. However, as the day progresses, the Moon reaches apogee—its furthest point from Earth in its elliptical orbit. At this distance, the Moon reflects the Sun’s light with greater intensity, creating an enhanced quality of light that favours flowers. While the morning holds some influence as a root day, the prevailing forces throughout the day make it primarily a flower day, making it a good time to sow hollyhocks, sweet peas, zinnias, echinacea, calendula, or rudbeckia—plants that will flourish in the warmth to come.

As the moon deepens into Leo, its fiery energy ignites a sense of passion and vitality, urging us to care for our plants with dedication from seed to harvest. With seed sowing only just beginning in March, this is a time of intention and preparation. Now is the moment to apply rich biodynamic compost to the beds, building fertile soil in readiness for when fruiting plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans are ready to be transplanted. By tending to the earth now, we ensure these plants receive the nourishment they need to thrive. Under Leo’s influence, we are reminded that just as plants require steady attention, so too do the passions we cultivate in our own lives.

The moon rises in the constellation of Leo, the lion, a sign associated with self-expression and creativity. With the moon in Leo, this is a favourable time to tend to fruiting plants in the garden. As we reach the midpoint of March, it may be an ideal moment in your region to sow tomatoes, peppers, broad beans, and peas, which can benefit from the dynamic forces of Leo, channelled through the moon. Meanwhile, from the perspective of the Earth, the sun transitions from Aquarius to Pisces, bringing a shift towards intuition, fluidity, and a deeper attunement to the unseen rhythms of nature.

The moon deepens into the constellation of Cancer, drawing our attention to the theme of nurturing. In biodynamic gardening, we cultivate the earth with care, supporting the garden’s vitality and abundance. Yet, it is not just the garden that flourishes—when we slow down, touch the soil, listen to the birds, and move in rhythm with nature, we, too, are nourished. The garden offers us restoration, grounding, and a deep sense of connection. Recognising these benefits, doctors in the UK can now issue ‘green prescriptions,’ granting patients access to gardening and outdoor workshops to support their well-being.

As the moon rises in the nurturing sign of Cancer, its watery influence strengthens the leafy aspects of plants, making this an ideal time to tend to greens, herbs, and foliage. In biodynamics, this is a moment to weed vegetable beds, sow salads, and enhance the vitality of leafy crops through care and attention. Whether sowing, transplanting, or simply observing the quiet rhythm of growth, this lunar phase invites a deeper connection with the living landscape. Just as leaves draw in light and moisture, we too can open ourselves to receptivity, intuition, and inner nourishment.

As the moon deepens into the constellation of Gemini, associated with intellectual pursuits, you may now become aware of ideas and thoughts that have surfaced over the past couple of weeks—perhaps with a nagging quality. This could be an invitation to research or explore a particular idea, and dedicating even a small amount of time to it may bring clarity or enlightenment. With so many ideas, passions, and pursuits, we are reminded of how precious our time is, yet moments of curiosity should never be neglected.

Saturday 8th March
As the moon rises in the constellation of Gemini, having reached the peak of its synodic rhythm, it is an ideal time to tend to and sow flowers. This alignment is further strengthened by a planetary trine, with the sun positioned 120 degrees from Mars—both in air signs, which are linked to flowers. Flowers not only bring joy and beauty to the garden but also attract insects and bees, whose pollination fulfils the flower’s highest purpose. Honeybees move gracefully from bloom to bloom, drinking nectar and spreading pollen, while the garden awakens to the song of spring and the blossoming of new life.

The Moon reaches its highest point on the horizon towards the end of the day as it moves from the constellation of Taurus to the constellation of Gemini. There are two main lunar rhythms: the synodic rhythm, which marks the familiar phases of the Moon, and the sidereal rhythm, which tracks the Moon’s position relative to the fixed stars. By closely observing the Moon’s highest point—the zenith—each day, we can see it gradually lowering over the course of two weeks. This downward movement encourages growth and vitality beneath the soil, helping plants develop strong roots and draw in nourishment.

The Moon rises in the constellation of Taurus, holding us steady as we go about our day. It moves alongside Jupiter and Uranus—while the Moon lingers for only a couple of days, Jupiter remains for months, and Uranus will stay for the next seven years. The grandeur of the cosmos cannot be overlooked; each moment carries a rhythm never before seen, yet within the shifting backdrop, familiar patterns emerge, spiraling through the past and future. In the garden, this is a time to turn compost piles and make final preparations for vegetable beds, shaping them in harmony with the unfolding season.

As the moon transitions from fiery Aries to grounded Taurus, it follows the ancient zodiac body, moving from head to throat. This shift aligns with Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent and a time for reflection, humility, and renewal. Observed 46 days before Easter (40 days of fasting, not counting Sundays), Ash Wednesday reminds us of life’s impermanence through the ritual of ashes, marking a period of inward contemplation and spiritual preparation. Just as Taurus steadies Aries’ impulsive energy, Lent invites a shift from action to stillness, guiding us through cycles of transformation and renewal in both the cosmos and the soul.

Rudolf Steiner, founder of the biodynamic movement and anthroposophy, considered there to be twelve human senses—going beyond the five commonly recognised but still fewer than the twenty-two acknowledged in ancient India. He described these as: Touch, Life, Movement, and Balance, which relate to bodily awareness; Smell, Taste, Sight, and Warmth, which perceive the external world; and Hearing, Speech, Thought, and the Sense of the ‘I’, which allow us to connect with others on a deeper cognitive and spiritual level. Engaging all these senses is essential to human development, yet in today’s screen-dominated world, it is more important than ever to ensure we actively nurture them—in our daily lives and in education.

The Moon rises in the constellation of Pisces before moving into Aries, shifting from the flowing, intuitive waters of the twin fishes to the bold, fiery energy of the ram. This transition marks a movement from reflection to action, as the element of fire ignites a sense of courage and initiative. It’s an ideal time to sow chilli peppers, which thrive in warmth—though depending on your climate, they may need the protection of a greenhouse. Aries, a sign of dynamism and new beginnings, encourages us to embrace growth with confidence, making this a powerful moment to set intentions and take decisive steps forward.

Today marks a momentous occasion as the planet Uranus transitions from Aries to Taurus for the first time in 76 years. While Earth takes one year to orbit the Sun, Uranus takes about 84 years. The last time Uranus was in Taurus, from 1934 to 1942, the world saw a period of great change, with shifts in technology, economy, and global conflict. This new cycle may bring unexpected changes in how we value material wealth, security, and our relationship with the Earth. As we move through this transformative time, we have an opportunity to embrace innovation in sustainable living and redefine our values. From a biodynamic perspective, this is a moment to shape the future by working with the forces of nature, fostering regeneration, and creating systems that are in harmony with the Earth and its rhythms.

We end the month of February with the New Moon. As the Moon rises in the constellation of Aquarius before quickly transitioning into Pisces, we are presented with an opportunity for renewal as we approach March and the calls of Spring. It is a time to pause, reflect, and prepare ourselves for the rest of the year. We can compare the seasons of the year to the parts of a plant and the elements: Winter corresponds to Water and the leaves; Spring to Air and the flowers; Summer to Fire and the fruits; and Autumn to Earth and the roots. Now, we find ourselves on the threshold of transition, moving gently from the depths of Water to the lightness of Air, as the energies of renewal begin to stir.

The Moon rises in the earthy constellation of Capricorn before shifting into the air sign of Aquarius, which emphasises social connections and presents a good opportunity to gather with loved ones. In the garden, however, this is an unfavourable time for sowing or transplanting, as Mercury crosses the elliptical path of the Sun from Earth's perspective, creating a sense of cosmic confusion. In biodynamics, such planetary shifts can disrupt the delicate interplay between earthly and cosmic forces, reminding us that timing is essential when working in harmony with nature’s rhythms.

Mercury transitions from the constellation of Aquarius to Pisces on its fast journey through the zodiac, completing its orbit around the Sun every 88 days. Mercury in Pisces subtly draws us into a search for what is hidden—sometimes revealing great wisdom, but more often leading us into a world of illusion, causing us to miss what is right in front of us. This reflects the polarity between Earth and the cosmos; we must discover where we wish to be. Can we, like a plant, position ourselves between both? Do we become rooted in the earth, or do we drift into the cosmos? Where shall we stand?

As Mercury becomes visible in the evening sky, joining Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn, we are reminded of its unique place in the solar system. The smallest and fastest planet, Mercury orbits the Sun every 88 days. In biodynamic practice, each compost preparation is linked to a planet. For Mercury, Chamomile 503 is added to the compost pile, where it helps assimilate calcium. Like the other preparations, it works in harmony with the entire set of six compost preparations, each contributing its unique influence to enhance the composting process. As the compost preparation disperses through the land, it benefits the soil and plants, starting as an inoculator in the compost pile and continuing to support healthy growth.

With the lunar forces now moving upward, this is a less favourable time for transplanting, as root development is best supported during a descending Moon. As the Moon deepens into the constellation of Scorpio, its watery influence makes it an ideal time to tend to leafy vegetables. The Moon and the constellations work together, with their forces mediating down to the Earth, where their rhythms shape the natural world. Biodynamics seeks to build a bridge between these cosmic forces and the land. The biodynamic gardener and farmer cultivate a relationship with their soil, plants, and animals, gradually developing an awareness of subtle changes. Over time, for some, the influence of these cosmic rhythms becomes apparent.
