Monday 30th March
The Moon rises in the fiery sign of Leo, bringing warmth, vitality, and a focus on fruiting plants in the garden. This is a supportive time for sowing and transplanting fruiting crops — such as tomatoes, chillies, peppers, cucumbers, courgettes, beans, and sweetcorn. At the midpoint of the day, we encounter a brief cosmic interruption as the Moon crosses the ecliptic path of the Sun, forming a descending lunar node. This is considered an unfavourable time for sowing and active gardening, as the natural rhythms are momentarily disrupted. Instead, we can use the middle of the day for planning, observing, or quieter activities, and carry out our practical gardening tasks in the early morning and late afternoon.

Friday 27th March
The Moon moves from Gemini into Cancer on its journey around the zodiac. Cancer, represented by the crab, brings a nurturing quality, a softening that can be felt both within ourselves and in the garden. In the garden, we experience how therapeutic this can be, as in nurturing the land, it begins to nurture us in return. Many biodynamic farms offer therapeutic and educational opportunities to the wider community, where through working with plants, pushing wheelbarrows, digging beds, and sowing seeds, we engage Rudolf Steiner’s twelve senses: touch, life, movement, balance, smell, taste, sight, warmth, hearing, speech, thought, and the sense of the I of the other. Through this engagement, we are gently brought back into our bodies. The mind can begin to settle, and a quiet sense of ease may arise, as we reconnect with the rhythms of the Earth and our place within it.

Thursday 26th March
The Moon moves through the constellation of Gemini for the whole day, bringing a sense of lightness and movement to both garden and mind. As an air constellation, Gemini lifts our attention towards the spaces between things, inviting exchange and communication, and offering a particularly favourable time for sowing flower seeds such as calendula, scabious, echinacea, and rudbeckia, preparing blooms for butterflies and bees, rich in nectar for the astral beings to drink from. Today is a day to sow with intention, not just for ourselves but for the wider life of the garden, supporting pollinators and the subtle ecology that surrounds them. As we work, we may notice the relationships between plants, insects, blossoms, and ourselves within the living landscape, and if we remain present within this movement, something meaningful can emerge, a quiet weaving of connections that reminds us we are part of the garden, not separate from it.

Wednesday 25th March
The Moon deepens into Taurus, drawing our attention gently down into the soil and the quiet, practical work of the day. In the afternoon, it crosses the threshold into Gemini, bringing a subtle shift — from grounded steadiness towards movement and exchange. As the Moon waxes, it now reaches its highest point on the horizon, marking a turning. From here, it begins its descent over the coming two weeks, a gesture of drawing forces back towards the Earth. In this descending rhythm, the garden invites us to plant and transplant, supporting the strengthening of roots and the settling of life into the soil. At this time of year, this shift carries particular significance — a window opening in which what we place into the ground may take hold more deeply. We are asked to work with care and intention, meeting the Earth as it breathes inward once more.

Tuesday 24th March
The Moon rises in the constellation of Taurus, offering a grounding quality to the day. In the garden, this is a good moment to make final adjustments to our planting plans, considering which vegetables and flowers grow well alongside one another. Often, those plants that pair harmoniously in the kitchen also thrive together in the soil — such as tomato and basil, or carrot and onion. In biodynamics, we seek to work within the garden organism, recognising the garden as its own living individuality. We may also turn towards the genius loci of the place, and through deep observation come to sense its essence. All of this draws the gardener into a closer relationship with the garden, and the garden into a deeper relationship with the gardener.

The Moon moves through Taurus today, a root day, drawing our attention down into the soil and the quiet, foundational life beneath our feet. Taurus brings a steady, grounding influence, inviting us to contemplate the substance of the Earth itself — a living composition of sand, silt, and clay, woven together with organic matter, mycelium, insects, and countless bacteria. From a biodynamic perspective, the soil is not inert but alive, and our task is to increase its vitality through good husbandry, careful observation, and the use of biodynamic preparations. The quality of the soil shapes the strength and character of the plants, and in turn the nourishment they offer to human beings. By tending the soil with care and reverence, we support a living continuum, where health flows from the Earth, through the plant, and into human life.

Sunday 22nd March
Today the Moon rises in Aries, a sign of warmth that relates to the fruiting aspect of the plant, bringing an impulse of vitality and outward growth. However, from a biodynamic research perspective, the day is considered unfavourable for working directly with plants and the soil due to the Moon being in perigee, its closest point to the Earth. At this time, lunar forces are intensified and can become excessive, overwhelming plant processes and leading to imbalanced growth or reduced vitality. Instead, it is more beneficial to turn towards preparation: tidying the garden, organising tools, building compost bays, or attending to practical tasks that support the overall health of the farm organism.

The Moon begins the day in Pisces, a leaf day, drawing our attention to the watery life of the plant and inviting gentle care, watering, and tending to what is already growing. By early afternoon it moves into Aries, shifting the impulse towards a fruit day, bringing warmth and activity. Yet the wider planetary picture speaks strongly, as Mars in Aquarius forms a trine with Jupiter in Gemini, creating a light-filled, expansive gesture that overrules the Aries impulse. This brings a brightening of the afternoon, lifting mood and energy, making it a fitting time to work with flowers and engage with colour and form. This movement towards light mirrors the inclination of the Sun we have just welcomed at the Spring Equinox, encouraging us to step outward with openness and anticipation.

Friday 20th March
Welcome the arrival of spring, marked by the day of the equinox, when the Earth stands in a moment of quiet balance in its journey around the Sun, and day and night are held in equal measure. The Earth’s axis neither leans towards nor away from the light, and for this brief threshold, darkness and light meet in harmony before the scales begin to tip towards the returning Sun. From here, the light strengthens and each day lengthens, drawing warmth into the soil and stirring life from its winter rest. This is the quickening, an awakening within the Earth organism, as sap begins to rise, buds swell, and the first blossoms open. The bees begin to take flight once more, their gentle buzzing weaving through the air, signalling the reanimation of the landscape. With the return of light comes a rising astrality, lifting energies from the depths of the soil into the atmosphere, inviting movement, growth, and renewal, and calling us to align with the expanding breath of the Earth as it turns once more towards life.

Thursday 19th March
Today we arrive at the New Moon, the last New Moon of winter, as it moves into Pisces to join the Sun, with Neptune, Saturn, and Venus also transiting this watery constellation. The New Moon is a moment of pause — a time for stargazing, turning inward, and reconnecting with the wider cosmos — inviting stillness, intuition, and a quiet listening to what is beginning to stir beneath the surface. From this point, the Moon begins to wax, gradually building light as it journeys towards the Full Moon, and in these early days we are asked to tend carefully to our foundations, nurturing what is just emerging. What we root now, both in intention and in action, will shape the path ahead, so we move gently yet with purpose, aligning our steps with our deepest intentions.

The Sun, Venus, Saturn, and Neptune all reside in the constellation of Pisces, bringing a strong watery influence from the planets today. In its journey around the zodiac, the Moon also moves into Pisces, where it will pass Neptune and then Saturn as it travels much more quickly through the sky. This creates a day permeated with the qualities of water, sensitivity, and receptivity in the garden. It is an auspicious time for gentle tasks such as weeding around established crops and tending what is already growing. However, it is not an ideal moment for transplanting, as we are only a few days away from the New Moon and the Moon is also moving through a ascending sidereal rhythm, moving towards a great exhale.

Tuesday 17th March
The Moon rises in Aquarius, a constellation connected with the flower element, bringing a light and airy quality into the garden and lifting our attention toward the blossoms and the spaces above the soil. This rhythm is briefly interrupted today by a lunar node, the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic path of the Sun, creating a moment of disturbance in the lunar influence. For this reason, the middle part of the day is considered unfavourable for sensitive gardening activities such as sowing or planting. In biodynamic agriculture we work with the rhythms of the Earth and the wider cosmos, seeking to enhance the quality of our produce while caring for the natural world. By working with these rhythms rather than against them, we support both the nourishment of the soil and the nutritional quality of the food it provides.

With the Moon still in Capricorn, it remains a good time to work with the soil and attend to the foundations of the garden. Beneath our feet, many different species of worms carry out their quiet labour, each fulfilling a particular role within the living soil. Earthworms can eat close to their own body weight in soil each day, transforming organic matter into a fine, colloidal humus. This humus holds nutrients in a stable and accessible form for plants, nourishing the roots and supporting steady growth. As the Moon moves into Aquarius later in the day, the emphasis begins to lift from the soil itself toward the airy spaces above the garden, inviting reflection and fresh perspective.

Sunday 15th March
With the Moon moving through Capricorn, the day carries the steady, grounding quality of a root influence. This is a good time to tend root crops and give attention to the deeper foundations of the garden. Compost work is especially suited to this earthy rhythm, inviting us to check the balance of the four elements within the pile. Water asks whether the heap is too wet or too dry, while air reminds us to notice if the compost is breathing well or slipping into an anaerobic state. Fire lives in the warmth of decomposition, prompting us to consider whether the materials have broken down fully or whether turning the heap might reawaken the process. Earth completes the picture, encouraging a good mix of materials so that the compost matures into rich, living soil.

The Moon begins the day in Sagittarius, carrying a lively and expansive quality that can make the morning feel bright and full of movement. Ideas come easily under this influence, and we may feel inspired to begin tasks in the garden that involve sowing or tending fruiting plants. As the day unfolds, however, the Moon passes quietly into Capricorn, and the atmosphere begins to change. The fiery enthusiasm of Sagittarius settles into the steady earth of Capricorn, inviting us to slow down and bring our attention closer to the ground. In the garden this is a good moment to turn toward the soil, preparing beds, tending compost, or working with root crops that grow beneath the surface. In our own lives the shift can feel grounding, helping us move from inspiration toward the patient work that allows our intentions to take root.

As the Moon deepens into Sagittarius, a warmth begins to stir, encouraging movement and purposeful activity. In biodynamic gardening this is a fruit day, a favourable time to sow plants that carry their harvest in the fruiting body of the plant. Seeds such as chillies, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, and aubergine respond well to these fiery influences, especially in the early weeks of March when many are being started under protection. The forces associated with Sagittarius can bring a sense of enthusiasm and momentum, quickening our activities and encouraging us to work toward our goals with renewed energy. In the garden this warmth can be felt not only in the soil and seed trays, but also in our own willingness to begin the season’s work with intention and care.

Today the Sun crosses the threshold of Aquarius and moves into the constellation of Pisces as we move closer to the beginning of spring. In the garden we also see the Moon move into Sagittarius on its much quicker journey around the zodiac. Ancient calendars, often embedded in the landscape through monuments and sacred sites, carefully tracked both solar and lunar rhythms. Many societies followed the Moon as the basis of their calendar because its phases are easily visible and offer a natural way of marking time. However, twelve lunar months equal about 354 days, eleven days shorter than the solar year, meaning the seasons would slowly drift. Over a cycle of nineteen years, seven extra lunar months are inserted, bringing the lunar and solar calendars back into near harmony and keeping seasonal festivals aligned with the rhythms of the Earth.

The Moon reaches its lowest point on the horizon today, and from here it will begin to ascend over the next two weeks. This marks a shift in the Moon’s influence, moving from forces working below the diaphragm of the Earth in the soil, toward forces that support the development of plants above the ground. From the vantage point of the southern hemisphere these rhythms appear reversed, and the same moment would mark the beginning of a descending Moon, favouring work such as transplanting and soil cultivation. Here in the northern hemisphere, however, we enter an ascending Moon period, when the focus turns toward supporting the life of the plant above the soil, encouraging growth, flowering, and the upward movement of vitality in the garden.

Tuesday 10th March

Tuesday 10th March
The Moon rises in the constellation of Scorpio, bringing the potential for transformation in our day. We may feel a pull towards making important decisions, as Scorpio carries a quality of depth and change. As the Moon moves through the zodiac, it also moves closer to and further from the Earth in its elliptical orbit. Today the Moon reaches one of its furthest points from the Earth. When the Moon is far from the Earth yet still reflecting the Sun’s light, the forces of light can feel intensified. This influence gently overrules the deeper qualities of Scorpio through the middle of the day, bringing a moment of air and light into the rhythm of the garden.

Monday 9th March

Monday 9th March
A harmonious trine forms between Mercury in Aquarius and Jupiter retrograde in Gemini, meeting across the sky at a gentle one hundred and twenty degree angle. Both planets move through airy constellations, creating a light and expansive atmosphere that favours thinking, communication, and the delicate work of the garden. While the Moon moves through the airy sign of Libra, the morning carries strong flower qualities, making it especially auspicious for sowing and tending flowering plants. By the afternoon the Moon crosses a threshold, leaving the lightness of Libra and entering the deep, watery sign of Scorpio, where the emphasis in the garden shifts from flowers toward leafy growth, favouring the cultivation of salads, spinach, and herbs.
